Cognitive Dissonance is definitely a normal occurance and this happens because you face different life situations which can cause conflicting thought sequences. In other words, Cognitive Dissonance is your psychological discomfort. What Cognitive Dissonance is: It is nothing but some sort of mental conflict you have especially when your behavior is not properly in alignment with what you believe. Cognitive Dissonance happens when you hold two or more beliefs which actually contradict one another. When you hold opposing beliefs, you literally face some sort of discomfort. If you give more focus on your Cognitive Dissonance, you are likely to be more anxious day by day as it gives you always the sense of shame or guilty. And it can actually make you have a wired mindset where you tend to hide or rationalize your actions or beliefs. Sometimes you may even avoid learning new pieces of information which contradict your beliefs. Cognitive Dissonance definitely makes you have problematic attitudes or actions. 

How you are affected: Cognitive Dissonance can definitely affect you in such a way that you don't even know what's happening. You tend to do things even though you know that what you are doing is actually going against what you believe. For example, you tend to smoke even though you are well aware about its adverse effects. If you promote some sort of behavioral pattern like doing some exercise or spiritual writing especially when you literally don't practice them, you can call it Cognitive Dissonance. When you tell a lie while practicing honesty is another important example for Cognitive Dissonance. It's obviously paradoxical when you eat meat pretending to be an animal lover. 

How to resolve the problem: You are supposed to persuade yourself that you don't have conflicting ideas. Always try to acquire knowledge that can help you get away with your dissonant beliefs. Start your day with a 5- minute meditation where you are either determined to change your beliefs or make your actions in alignment with your beliefs through affirmations. Regularize this practice and moving on you will have the muscle memory about the necessary actions you have to take up in this regard. You can change your dissonant beliefs and achieve cognitive coherence through the practice of lucid dreaming as well.
